PAINTING PERU

Ah, Peru - the land of the llama.  In May of 2009 I had the experience of a lifetime visiting Peru with a wonderful group of artists.   The trip was sponsored jointly by Overseas Adventure Travel and Flying Colors Art Workshops, each of whom did a fabulous job of putting it together.  Our artist instructor was Linda Doll, aws, nws, who saw to it that we painted and learned new techniques each day in addition to our very busy travel schedule. Our Peruvian adventure began in Lima with lots of sightseeing including a visit to the fish market which provided the inspiration for "Rub-a-Dub-Dub, Six Birds in a Tub."

After a few days in Lima, we flew to Cusco and visited major Inca sites at Pisac, Sacsayhuaman (sounds like sexy woman) and, of course, the most awe-inspiring of all, Machu Picchu.  With nearly 200 photos of it alone, it was not easy to decide on the composition for my first painting of Machu Picchu.  I decided on one that would include the llamas who roam freely about the site.

Arguably the man-made floating islands of the Uros Indians in Lake Titicaca are the most fascinating subjects in that region, but it was the delightful ladies from the village of Iscapataza on the lake shore who prepared a wonderful lunch for our group that I will most remember. After lunch they sat around spinning their wool and telling us about themselves.  Then they turned the tables on us and asked where we were from and about ourselves.  Needless to say, they are the subjects of "The Yarn Spinners."

The paintings "Market Day," "Home from Market" and "Peruvian Harvest" are typical of many places throughout Peru and are composites of a few of the more than 2,300 photos I snapped while visiting this unforgettable country.  I'm delighted that I will be reliving the adventure as I paint Peru for many years to come.
